The underarm area is one of the most sensitive in the body an armpit rash can be embarrassing and irritating because it is itchy, scaly, has a burning sensation or is filled with pus .Some causes of armpit rash can be avoided while some may be caused by allergic reactions.
SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
Common symptoms of armpit rush include itching, flakiness, pain in the armpit area, strong bad odour and darkening of skin.
An armpit rush is most commonly caused as a result of an allergic reaction due to a deodorant /perfume you are using, soap you are using or even the clothes you are wearing. The allergic reaction caused by clothes may be due to a material nickel which is commonly found in buttons, jewellery and zippers.
Folliculitis is another cause it is an infection of the hair follicles which can affect your underarms causing an armpit rash. The rash may look like pimples in some cases and it is red and painful. This infection can be caused by shaving which causes your arms to be more prone to the infection. Shaving causes dryness, ingrown hairs and razor bumps which leave the armpit area itchy .Proper shaving enables the hairs to be cut off at the skin surface causing minimal irritation.
Fungal Infection; the armpit area is normally moist as it is rarely exposed to sunlight this provides the ideal condition for fungi and yeast to reproduce causing a red and itchy rash.
Other infections; Sometimes an armpit rash may be caused by prevailing conditions and diseases such as HIV, diabetes, syphilllis or scabies. An armpit rash can also be a symptom of scarlet fever it normally starts with fever and a sore throat then a rash that starts at the neck and chest then it spreads to the armpit.
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
Ensure the armpit area is kept clean as a measure to prevent this disease also ensures that your clothes are washed with harmless chemicals where possible. When choosing deodrants, detergents, perfumes choose those that are non irritant be careful to avoid those that may not be suitable for you if you notice any that is causing an irritation stop using it immediately. Deodorants normally contain alcohols, aluminum and fragrances which may cause a rash. Once you have diagnosed the cause of the armpit rash you can be able to treat it even at home by washing the armpit area with mild soap and allowing it to dry, use over the counter anti fungal lotion or cream on the affected area. For follicitus one can place a hot clothe over the armpit area to promote drainage .Drink water regularly as this will help your body regulate its temperature as you keep hydrated. Wear loose-fitting clothing to allow your skin breathe easier to avoid folliculitis also ensure you clothing is made from natural material such as cotton which also allow your skin breathe easier. It is advisable you see a doctor for further consultation especially if the infection keeps reccuring.The doctor may recommend an anti-fungal cream or oral medication depending on his diagnosis.
